I have never been on any birth control other than using condoms and decided to get an iud, Skyla more towards ladies who haven't had a child. Did lots of research and it is a shame that you only find negative and scary stories online bc no one will take the time to write a good review. I am a woman who does not ever see side effects from any medication, everything always works as it states on ...
I went in to get skyla inserted today. Most painful experience EVER! It was like really bad cramps x1000. After inserting my doctor said I should be fine after 5 minutes. I wasn't. I was in so much pain I was shaking uncontrollably and almost fainted. The nurses said my body just "rejected" it. Needless to say my doctor had to remove it. Worst experience with birth control ever.

I LOVE Skyla. I've had it for about 10 months now, and it's just been amazing. The insertion was not comfortable, but it was definitely manageable. I was not dizzy afterward, I actually felt great and was fine to go about my day. The first month (during the week my period would be), I had sharp cramping, but it only lasted for a day or so before subsiding. Each month, the cramping lessened, and after my 5th month they had stopped completely. I highly recommend this product, don't let the bad reviews scare you, it has worked great!Read More Read Less

Oh my sweet Jesus! Not ONLY do my periods last longer than seven days, They come almost twice a month. My back is so sore that I am constantly writhing around to help relieve the almost unbearable ache. A week before my period I am angered quickly, I cry uncontrollably and I am completely down. Now, I have broken out into an awful rash on BOTH inner thighs it is spreading up my buttocks and I itch inside my skin all down my legs and lower back. I got the device inserted in May and it WILL BE COMING OUT TOMORROW! MY HAIR IS THINNING, MY SKIN IS DRY AND MY SYMPTOMS ARE LOSTED UBDERNEATH SEVERE! My body is rejecting this "device" I'm praying that I am okay . This should be taken KFC the market. It is dangerous!Read More Read Less

I have been on Skyla for 8 months. I love it! Inserting it hurt and I felt like I was having a bad period the first two days. Minor spotting first few weeks. Minor 2-4 day periods first 3 months. No periods since! I lost weight from birth control pill and sex drive has increased. I sincerely recommend Skyla

I have had an overall positive experience, not all skyla experiences are bad! I decided to get skyla originally because I figured it would be easier and more effective than taking the pill. The insertion was uncomfortable and got a sharp cramp. It lasted for a minute, then I got a few bad cramps that night and the next day. I've now had it about 3 weeks. I've had a little bit of random cramping and had spotting for the first week and a half. Since then it hasn't been bad. The only negative thing I've noticed is that my breasts have been very tender for the last few days. On the positive side, I think I may have had an imbalance with hormones before while on the pill and I think Skyla has reset that. I no longer experience pain or discomfort with sex that I had before switching to skyla. Definitely give it a try if you're considering it. Read More Read Less

I've had Skyla since January 27th of this year, it's not getting any better like what I had thought. My period will last for 7 days then its back to cramping a week later. I'm 4'11 and 115 lbs I'm a tiny person, that could be why I'm so sensitive to the cramps. Personally, I don't think it's worth it any more, I have really oily skin and it has also made my acne turn cystic like every month and it takes forever to go away then by the time it does go away I'm starting my period again. Weighing the pros and cons, I'm not pregnant but is it worth the pain 3/4 weeks of every month... I'm always paranoid that it has moved out of place and my boy friend can feel it in me. Sex is painful and my sex drive has gone down since getting this IUD and I'm getting it the hell out of me and going back to pills! Read More Read Less

I absolutely love this IUD. I have had it for almost a year now. At first I had bleeding for the first full month but slowly went away. Now I only spot every now and then.

I've had skyla for about 5 months now and I have to say I don't love it. The insertion process was not as bad as I thought, despite the crazy reviews. Once I got it however I had pretty intense cramps, lower back pain, bleeding,

I got the Skyla because the Mirena I had gone in originally for was too large- the change was fine with me. I have to say that the insertion was not bad for me, I felt a slight cramp but otherwise the doctor was wonderful and I had minimal cramping after. Moving forward though, I have encountered pain during and after intercourse ( I had sex the day of insertion and it was fine) certain positions both my partner and I can feel the IUD, and if it is bumped I will immediately begin to bleed afterwards and my lower abdomen will cramp up. I have also had bleeding in my 6th month of having the IUD for a full 29 days, it isn't menstrual blood, its bright red blood as if I have a wound. I have had to go to the doctor twice because of blood in my urine, and symptoms that felt like a UTI but with results that came back negative for such. I loved the idea of having safe protected sex with my partner without a concern for pregnancy, this is the reason I got one in the first place, but the IUD has definitely impacted my sex life and my day to day life. Bleeding for a month, or no longer having a regular period to rely on has been stressful. I cramp up during the week before and during the bleeding. My hormones feel all out of whack. I have never had children and I do wonder if this would be a different experience if I was an older woman with this. At this point I am seriously considering removing the device. I have never been on a previous birth control. If you are considering this my only advice is to really listen to your body and ask lots of questions. I am willing to take pain and cramping but the fear of potential UTI, the IUD shifting and becoming ineffective, the problems it brings with not wanting to have sex because you don't want pain ..ehhhh .. these seem to all be potential possibilities that I have both read about and experienced. Where is the male birth control!?!?!?Read More Read Less

Please, do not be afraid to get this because of the bad reviews. Please remember people tend to write reviews only if theyou have bad experiences. I'm writing this because I almost canceled my appt because the bad reviews freaked me out. IT'S NOT THAT BAD. So I had mine inserted just over an hour ago. The insertion cramp was not that bad, and it went away after a second. Since my appt I've had very minor cramps that feel like period cramps. I'm also back at work!!! I'll write another review after a few months on how well it's working. Please don't not get it because of the bad reviews. It wasn't awful. And I could kick myself for almost canceling my appt because I read to much. Read More Read Less

I do not ever write reviews online, but I do read them. I let reading the horrific reviews about the Sklya scare me away for months. I cannot take birth control, it makes me extremely depressed, and moody. It had a very negative effect on my relationship because of the anxiety I had while taking it. Getting the Sklya placed, has really been the only REAL discomfort I can say I've had. It only lasted about 30 seconds, and then it was over. I was very uncomfortable for about 2 hours, I wish I would have had someone go with me to drive me home, because I had a 30 minute drive, and I just wanted to lay down. As soon as I got home, I got a really hot bath, and then laid down for a while, then I was fine. I expected heavy bleeding for days after reading all of the reviews. I have not had ANY. Occasionally I have spotting or mild cramps, but nothing that stops me from my daily routine. I bought a pack of pads the day I got the IUD placed, and there might be 5 missing out of the pack, and I've had the IUD a month. I have my follow up ultrasound this week to make sure that it is in the right place. SO FAR, I am very happy with my experience, and wish I would have gotten the SKYLA a lot sooner. OH, and my mood swings are gone, and I have been able to throw away my anxiety medicine. DO NOT let all the horrible reviews scare you away, give it a try. Everyone is different. It's working for me so far!Read More Read Less

After my second child I decided to get an iud as birth control. My doctor recommended Skyla. So that's what I got! The insertion doesn't take long but it's not exactly a lovely experience but don't let me scare you because it was truly bearable. You will feel pressure and a couple pinches. I didn't take any medicine prior to my visit, it was okay. I had slight cramping but nothing serious and that went away quickly. The bleeding for me was ridiculous. Lol... For the first 6 months my sex life was basically non existent. So that's how it works! Lol it ruins your sex life from bleeding. Kidding, but really it sucked. After that I basically had no more bleeding and really don't ever have periods except once in a blue moon. I've gained A LOT of weight since being put on Skyla (30lbs!) some will say it's not caused by the iud though so do your own research. I've never been this big in my life. The mood swings and depression is awful for me!!! I still get cramps from time to time. Usually they aren't bad just noticeable. Rarely I will have extreme cramps! They will put you down for the day. I'm sure this iud is different for everyone but I plan on having mine removed soon! I've had it for 10 months. Read More Read Less

When it was inserted I had major cramping after. I then spotted for about a week then a few weeks later I had a period and it was all downhill from there. I was constantly in pain, always spotting, and never felt good. 3 months in I decided that something really was not right so I went in to have it removed. My doctor argued with me and told me I hadn't let my body adjust long enough and she could prescribe me something for the discomfort. I told her that something wasn't right and it needed to come out. Once she was in there she knew immediately why I was experiencing the discomfort; my body was ejecting it and it was already half way out! So, my advise is that it may work for you, it may not. Just know your own body and know when something isn't right. We all have different bodies and react differently to different things. Read More Read Less

Like most others I had horrible insertion experience. I went for Mirena but my cervix opening was too small so I got switched to Skyla mid procedure which I never wouldve done in the first place. I bled for 30 days. Worst cramps of my life. When the bleeding stopped I spotted for months especially after sex. My periods now last 10-14 days and I have a normal period of 3-4 days without birth control. Also the worst cramps before during and after period. Especially after sex as well. Not normal cramps but the ones that stop you in your tracks and make you double over. I've now had it 9 months I think I will have this removed due to bleeding and pain. I dont think IUD's work well for women who have not had children. Read More Read Less

It's now monday and I had Skyla inserted on Friday. I was supposed to get mirena inserted but when they sounded my uterus it was too small :/ I've read a lot of reviews about how much the sounding hurts- but it didn't for me! I asked them to sound it again to double check that my uterus was too small for Mirena (I really wanted 5 years of coverage instead of 3). I've never had kids so that could explain why my uterus was too small and they had to insert Skyla instead. The insertion through my cervix didn't hurt that much (other than mild discomfort)... I didn't take any cervical softening drugs either. What really hurt was when they "opened" the arms of Skyla and pushed it further into my uterus. I could actually feel the arms hitting the side of my uterine walls. I broke into a cold sweat afterwards and was quite dizzy and crampy. I took a bath and cuddled up with a heating pad afterwards which helped a lot! I've had several piercings (including my nipples) and honestly, this hurt more. The insertion itself wasn't that bad but the cramps afterwards were awful. Fortunately heating pads and painkillers have taken care of most of it. I've had a colposcopy.. that hurt much worse than the actual insertion but like I said, the cramps afterwards were awful. The most discomfort for me is when I have to go #2... it makes my cramping so much worse, but I'm hoping this will pass in a few weeks. I haven't had any spotting or bleeding yet!Read More Read Less

I had all kinds of problems with this IUD. Abdominal pain near right ovary, headaches, my hair fell out in clumps, depression, and gained 30 lbs over a year and a half while having it. Also, mysteriously the cells on my cervix changed and I had to have a LEEP procedure done which was horrible.

I would not recommend Skyla to anyone. I had INTENSE cramping for the three months I had it in. Like so bad that I would cry and not be able to move from my bed for days. My periods also lasted about 10 days. Initially, I bled for at least 30 days straight. It was not worth all the pain in my opinion.

I don't usually do these things online, but since this was a terrible experience for me, I thought I'd share it with everyone just in case you plan to get skyla. I thought it was going to be a piece of cake. I did my research and saw the reviews (most reviews were bad) but I figured people were just being dramatic and I was still going to get it. The procedure was easy and simple. But then 10 minutes into the drive home, I started experiencing the worst cramps I ever felt in my life. I was moaning and groaning the drive home. I got home and got in a hot shower and just cried and cried the pain was so bad. It lasted all day. I've had it for a month now and the entire month I've had a brown discharge. The cramps are still here too and that's why I'm writing this today. The cramps are still bad I don't understand why they're still here. I'm very pain tolerant. I have many tattoos and piercings and have regular painful period cramps during my period. But these are insane. My follow up which was two weeks ago, everything looked good and normal my doctor said. So idk why these cramps are still here and they are so painful. I'm calling tomorrow and having it removed because this is messing with my daily life. So to anyone who is thinking about getting Skyla and reads the reviews and sees that most reviews look EXACLTY like this one, we are NOT lying to you. Save yourself the time and money and do not get this iud. If I could go back in time I would totally change my mind and not get this. Sincerely, a very upset girl with a heating pad :( Read More Read Less

I was so worried whenever I decided to get an IUD. I was scared because of the pain that would happen during insertion. Although the impending pain scared me, I ultimately decided to get one because it seemed to have the least side effects compared to the other forms of birth control. I eventually got one after months of researching and today was the day of my insertion. It's been roughly 4 hours and I have had cramping nonstop. It's not unbearable, but it is definitely unpleasant. The insertion was nowhere near as bad as I had first thought. Yes, each step of the procedure was painful but it was truly bearable. Honestly, the thing that hurt the worst to me was the speculum. When they measured my uterus it was a deep almost heavy feeling pain and then I felt it again whenever they placed the Skyla. It was very quick and if you have bad period pains then it is definitely managable. I would truly go through it again because now I don't have to worry about getting pregnant for 3 years. If there is anyone on the fence about this I would say that everyone's experience is different, but if you feel like it is your best option go for it and don't fear the pain too much. I just got home from the Skyla placement procedure. As for effectiveness, I can't rate yet. The procedure itself is definitely uncomfortable, a very weird pain that i've personally never really felt before. It feels like a very deep cramp but subsides quickly. I did feel a bit woozy when I sat up on the table so I just layed back down for 10min with some ice water my doctor got for me, the feeling passed and I was fine. Now I'm just experiencing painful period cramping off and on but worse with movement, not seeing any bleeding as of yet. I only got the IUD because I experienced a migraine with aura about 2 months ago and apparently you can't be on estrogen if you experience these. I was reluctant to get one as the thought of an implant made me anxious but I'm trying to be positive as I feel the IUD is the best non-estrogen option for me! Everybody has a different pain tolerance and experience (same as pills etc) so take reviews with a grain of salt and do whats best for you! Don't let the procedure scare you out of getting it done if that's what's holding you back. You aren't going to die and it's really not THAT terrible. Read More Read Less
