I have lived most of my life in sunny Florida, Georgia, California, and Texas and would spend all my time outdoors if it were possible. So I realize I am just paying for past lack of diligence in protecting Scottish skin. This is my second round with Fluorouracil, 5%. The first time I treated only the back of my hands and the skin is now soft with just some age spots. The whole process took...

I can only describe its use as pure hell. Imagine putting your head in a fire ant nest and you will come close to feelings I've experienced. At times I've been unable to function; driving I've even had to pull over and stop. I could go on, but this is enough for you to get the impression. I'm sure it performs its intended function, but that needs to be on someone besides me!

No issues until about day 10. The areas of my face being treated began to feel "burned." Specific spots in the treated areas began turning red. The pain and irritation began ramping up days 11 through 14. Honestly, at day 12 I almost stopped using it, but I powered on. It's been two weeks since the end of the treatment period and signs of redness and irritation are almost completely gone. No itching or pain in the treated area. The skin has essentially healed and is now soft and smoother than before my treatment started. The scaley sun damaged spots seem to be gone and the brown spots have lightened considerably. I have actinic keratosis on my hands and forearms up to short-sleeve top length. Had surgery for squamous cell carcinoma on my forearm and was prescribed this cream for the AK. 2 1/2 weeks out of 3 total so far and red spots have formed, some raised/swollen. Just starting to hurt, but tolerable. Pharmacist told me to only apply to the AK; think that’s helped with tolerance. Also using a topical corticosteroid cream for pain. Highly recommend! Will likely have to go through this again between my neck and shoulders minimally. Oh if we’d only known in the 60’s-70’s what we know today! I’m fair-skinned and blonde and was a sun baby then, so expecting more treatment. Beats the alternative!! Read More Read Less

I started this terrible journey 26 days ago. My dermatologist froze a couple spots off of my body. She wanted to freeze two or three spots off of my face, and I told her no please don’t touch my face. I have a vacation to go on. She then proceeded to say that she would just prescribe a cream for my face, I was given no details of this horrible journey. I picked up the cream it said to apply every night to face and neck and then wash off in the mornings. I began to do so. After about the fifth day, my face and neck were covered in red blotches that only got worse as I continued on with the cream . I called the doctors office because I thought I was allergic to it because of the lack of information given to me when she prescribed it they told me no this is normal. It will only get worse before it gets better. My last application will be in three days , this has basically shut my life down. I had to cancel my vacation it is extremely painful and also you look terrible after I figured out what I had gotten myself into I knew I had to continue on with the treatment. I have no idea how long it will take after I finish my last application here in a few days I have read that it can take up to two months for the redness to go away. If I would’ve been more educated on this cream, I would’ve probably chosen to do the treatment, but I would’ve chosen a time when I had two or three months to recover. It takes planning. I have even come somewhat depressed because I feel like I can’t leave the house . I am praying that my results in the end are wonderful. I do know that from now on I will be wearing at least 50 to 75 block on my face and neck for the rest of my life. I don’t even think they made sunscreen when I was a kid , I’m pretty sure they did not. I am still trudging forward. I hope I am not scarred from this. Read More Read Less

Been using it for a week and nothing is happening. Because I’ve had 2 Mohl surgeries and pre-cancers frozen off in the past, it’s weird to me that absolutely no red spots are showing up. It could be a good thing I suppose but I was expending at least a red spot or two. Maybe it doesn’t work on everyone.

I had a LARGE, baseball size, squamous cell on my shin. Yes, it got ugly, during treatment, but definitely worth it! No pain and fast healing after treatment stopped. My last biopsy was negative!!! Sure beats surgery and useless chemical freezing. Highly recommend this vs the alternatives!

I am a typical case I imagine. I'm 65 years old and started going bold in my 20's. In the early days I didn't use sunscreen or wear a hat, so most of the skin damage is on my forehead which is were I went bold first. Now I'm almost finished with the treatment after after applying the cream each evening for 26 days so far. I have 4 days to go and the symptoms are less severe than around days 20-22 when they were at there worst. I guess the cream has already killed off a lot of the precancerous cells which is why it is less severe now. If you are currently discouraged and desperate try and keep going because if you stop too soon many of the benefits will be lost. The burning and itching symptoms should start to reduce before the end of the treatment so please don't loose help. Clearly, if you are really having problems consult you doctor.Read More Read Less

Did this two years ago using the cream 2x daily. Was supposed to do it for 3 weeks only made it two weeks. It felt like my face was sleeping on a hot iron. Went in for check up 3 months later. Doctor was very impressed in what was accomplished in only 2 weeks. He also informed me that everyone is affected differently. Going through another round starting today. Wish me luck!

Applied to entire face 2x daily for 17 days. Dr. Prescribed 21-28 days. Had to stop, face was very red, swollen and on fire. The pain brought me to tears. Stopped applying cream 5 days ago and face is now extremely painful. Skin is coming off in think chunks. Vaseline, aquaphor, burning. Cannot find relief. Will never do this again

Buckle up. This med is not for the faint of heart. I almost cried from the pain after 14 days. Don’t get too much in creases by the nose! It settles there. I’ve packs help but pain meds don’t seem to touch it. I was fine until day 14 when I stopped. Now it feels like torture. I think the new skin will be nice and I know it worked but it is a painful journey.

Had a patch of rough skin on right cheek, had it removed for year until finally was cancer & need Mohs surgery. Felt the same thing on my nose, went to dermatologist who took biopsy which was negative. Went to my GP told something was still wrong. So surprise! I’m covered with red sores, including the area the D biopsied & a spot he said looked vascular! Some are starting to crust over, but some more are popping up as I put it all over my face. Any one experience Tiredness when taking this? I’m a breast cancer survivor of 10 years. No chemo but radiation exhausted & nausea Ed me. Read More Read Less

Hi all, I'm on blood thinners due to heart and blood pressure issues. I'm in week 3 of twice per day application. I think it's taking a week longer than the average to see visible results. The Fluorouracil is definitely working. Stay focused on the goal and don't give up!

Actinic keratosis recurring after 7 years in same area. Top of my lip. About the same response to cream as before. I experienced stinging, burning, pain, extreme redness and eventually a crustiness. I used this cream for 2 weeks, every other night. I return to the Dermatologist in one month.

I was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer of the lower lip. I've never heard of Fluorouracil until the surgeon said he wanted to try this before he proceeded with surgery. I'm terrified of surgery!! Surgeon drew a blue line from one side of my mouth to the other.....terrified me!! I though a little cut and it would be done. Should have done some research! Surgeon suggested fluorouracil before surgery. Started this cream 2 weeks ago....bottom lip is pretty nasty but praying this works. Has anyone used this on their lip for squamous cell cancer and it worked?? Is there a place on the internet to go and read about this treatment other than webmd? I sure hope we all win this battle!!! PS I have no idea what the effectiveness of this is but had to choose one to post this review Read More Read Less

I had many actinic keratosis on my forearms from a lifetime of sun exposure. They appeared as small pink spots. Application of the Fluorouracil cream was easy. I used a nitrile glove to minimize contact with my fingers. It took over a week to see red spots appear. They got darker over time and near the end of the 2 weeks began to scab over. I didn't experience itching like others have described. Only minor itching like you'd experience from a healing scrape. It's surprising how it only affects the keratosis. Read More Read Less

I have used this product successfully for 20 years for actinic Keratosis and prevention of squamous cell carcinoma. No problem. However, I want to put out a warning. I opened a new tube and it didn't respond the way it always has. Mine usually just reacts to damaged skin. This reacted almost instantly to healthy skin. I quit using it and tossed the tube. Bad mistake. I thunk the chemical mix was off, went systemic, blistered my back, then my legs turned purple, got very sick. Couldn't get anyone to take me seriously, just treated topically. Nearly died before an ER Dr. gave me prednisone. My arms, back, thighs, legs and feet were swollen and purple by that time. I couldn't even get on the gurney and needed help from EMTs. This cooked and poisoned me from the inside. Five months later I'm unsure if I will recover. I'm not as purple, but purple is still purple. I think something got messed up in quality control. It is capable if killing someone!!! Read More Read Less

I stopped putting the cream on my head after using it 2x a day for 14 days per my doctor's instructions. My head (according to my wife) looks ugly. Red blotches, etc. I must say that as of today which is 3 days since I stopped using the cream, I have had no adverse reactions such as itching, pain, etc. It is somewhat uncomfortable but tolerable. My doctor will let me know the results when I see him later this month. After finishing with the cream I started to put Aveeno moisturizer on my head. It seems to be helping the healing but I have no idea. I have not given the medication 5 stars because I have not yet seen the results or heard my doctor's opinion.Read More Read Less

As an ex golf coach, I spent too many days in the sun for over 20 years of my life using minimal sun protection. I am 65 and these habits have now caught up with me. My dermatologist recently prescribed "Tolak Creme" which contains 4% Fluorouracil and told me to apply this nightly for four weeks. He also made me aware of the expected symptoms of this treatment and I began application nightly. I applied the cream to my forehead and temples for the full 4 weeks. Although the final week was a little uncomfortable, I did not have any of the extreme symptoms experienced by many people on this forum. What I did have though was a very strong reaction to the treatment. My forehead and temples were covered in sores, yes kinda measles like but the worst areas were scabby and inflamed. I stopped after 4 weeks and I thought this mess on my face would take at least another 4 weeks to clear. I am now 10 days into the healing process and I am delighted to report that, although there are some small blotches here and there I can once again face the world without wearing headgear. My skin feels great and I am looking forward to my follow up appointment with my dermatologist at the beginning of June. Read More Read Less

Diagnosed with Actinic Keratoses in the Squamous Cells (lips). Applying Fluorouracil on my lips was easy. Using a dental bite piece helps to keep lips apart and prevents the medicine on lips from sticking together. Do not apply to the corners of your mouth and not too thick either. After a few days, the blistering pain and irritation begins, following yellow sticky drainage. A lite wash using a damp gauze pad with a non perfumed soap in circular motions help loosen the sticky drainage, but DO NOT PEEL it off. Dabbing dry with a pillowcase helps, applying Vitamin E lightly before eating and drinking eases the cracking. A straw has been my best friend. Feel like giving up.... You have gone this far, skip a day if needed, but jump back in. This shall pass. Good Luck.Read More Read Less
