Please watch out for these bulletin boards. I am a very sensitive person, health-obsessed and health food and everything, and I have had nothing but a good experience- no side effects to my surprise. Just relief. Also had in-depth conversations with doctors about generics vs. main brand and there is no difference. I have switched between Kariva and Viorele etc and no change. I love this drug.! The worst birth control I have ever used in my entire life. I used to take Azurrette and, like others, CVS switched it out for this new kind. I have been taking it for a little over three months and it is TERRIBLE. My first period on it lasted for over two weeks when normally it is just a few days long. It was so heavy and not at all what I was used to. I also experienced migraines and heavy mood ...

THIS IS THE WORSY PILL EVER!!! Once I got on these pills, my gas and bloating problems got 20 timese worst. Every second I have gas with a strong sulfur smell >.< And I gained about 4 pounds within 2 months of taking these pills. Also my hair is falling out like crazy. I notice my edges are thinner and my hair texture feels odd. Also I have been feeling extremely depressed, have no motivation, and feeling tired every second. Don't take these pills. Once my period comes on I'm stopping these. Read More Read Less

I have been on a couple different BC pills in my life (minipill, loestrin and its generic, and others). This pill has given me by far the LIGHTEST period. It lasts two days or less and its very light. BUT this pill has given me the craziest mood swings- Im emotional, cranky, and irritable. My libido is NONE. I have NO desire for sex and cant really enjoy it when I do have sex. I only have one partner-my husband- and nothing has changed to make me this irritable and not in the mood besides this pill. It has done its job of keeping me from getting pregnant- but Im not sure its worth all these side effects..been on it 5 months and might just finish this last pack of pills.Read More Read Less

Do not take this pill! I have been extremely emotional, irritable, insecure and have had crazy mood swings. It caused such emotional problems that it nearly ruined my relationship. It has also caused me to gain weight. I am so glad I found these reviews, I though I was going crazy!

Wow! I really wish I would have read reviews before taking this for 6 months :( I also had Kariva from RiteAide for like 7 years....got switched to Viorele in February, such headaches! I would get like 2 debilitating headaches a month. I never got them like this before. I had to get blood work done...finally asked them to change my prescription. I am on a new brand, we will see how this one goes. Going to search the reviews on that one now. Thank you to everyone who reviewed this product!

I too had my prescription of KARIVA filled at CVS and they switched me to VIORELE and just said it's the generic brand, it works the same, yada yada. I've had headaches ever since (2 months) so after reading the comments on here, I called my CVS pharmacist and asked why I was given Viorele instead of Kariva and she said that drug is a special order. I've come to the conclusion that CVS has a special contract or something with the makers of Viorele - I'm calling right now to switch my prescription to Walmart... Read More Read Less

These reviews have made me feel like a normal person again.(which I haven't felt like in a long time since this stupid pill.) I started taking this birth control about a year ago (switched from Kariva by Rite Aid) and the worst side effect has been headaches. The headaches started out every month and now I get them almost everyday. I started to get nervous, thinking I had a serious medical issue. (I have never suffered from migraines.) My own mom says I have not seemed myself lately. I am also always tired. It was my first year teaching this past year so I blamed it on stress. These reviews have saved me! I called my pharmacist today (currently CVS) and she told me it was discontinued. After reading this I knew that wasn't true and I stated that I knew they could get it if a person needs it. She said, "Ok, I will call the manufacturer to see if we can get it or your former pharmacist to see if they have any left." I will not be taking Viorele after the end of this pack. It is AWFUL. Kariva was always the best. Never felt any side effects and took it for 8 years. I do not understand why doctors see that their patients are taking this horrible pill and continue to allow us to take it. I called my doctor and spoke to a nurse and she said a lot of people have side effects when switching from one generic to another. Different people react differently to medication but obviously this medication has more severe side effects for many many people. So sad that people have to go through this. I feel all of your pain!! I'm so relieved to see others having problems. I've been on Kariva for over 2 years with no problems. I got switched this month to Viorele & I spotted for 2 days during the second week of pills and have been bleeding heavily ever since (7 days so far). My period are usually 4 days long and are not heavy. I'm not even supposed to start my period for another week. Also, my stomach gets upset daily and my mood swings are bad. This is worse than my side effects on Yaz. I called my gyno & he said that I can request that the pharmacy order Kariva specifically and if they won't, switch pharmacies. Kariva is still available, it just is more expensive for the pharmacy than Viorele. He said it is the same drug, but people do react differently to different generics. He said that I am still protected as far as not getting pregnant goes, but said the bleeding may continue all the way through my period. This is a horrible drug and I will be getting off of it as soon as I can.Read More Read Less

Girls, Im just starting this drug today. If you are reading these negative reviews, just remember that these are not ALL of the people who are taking this drug. the amount of people writing these reviews is probably about 2% of the population of viorele users. I am going to see how this drug effects ME without having any fears in my mind! I will be back in 3 months to tell you how it goes!

I switched to this after having problems with Ortho Tri-Cyclen and Avaine (Ortho-Tri Cyclen didn't regulate my periods well & I had tons of breakthrough bleeding and an ectopic pregnancy. Aviane worked well at regulating my period, but was too androgenic and resulted in bloating/weight gain and acne.) With Viorele, my periods are regular and I don't have any side effects. So far I'm very happy with it.

Taking this pill was one of the worse things that's happened to me. I was given this drug by my CVS pharmacist who informed me that Kariva (which I've been on for years and have never had any problems) was discontinued. She never spoke to my doctor about this switch in prescriptions and because I needed birth control, I took it. Immediately I started gaining weight. No matter what I did, the weight wouldn't come off. I had mood swings and was very emotional. My brain constantly felt like it was in a fog. Needless to say, when my OBGYN found out that I had been taking this medication, she demanded I stop taking it at once and told me that Kariva had not been discontinued. I'm beyond upset with the CVS pharmacist for taking it upon herself to switch my medication and lie to me. I do not recommend this drug for anyone. Read More Read Less

This is the first time I have felt compelled to write a review for a drug. I began using Viorele just a little over a week ago, and the side effects I am experiencing are so terrible and intense, I will not continue to use this birth control. I have experienced nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, breast tenderness, increased appetite, vaginal dryness, and fatigue. This has been the week from hell. I do not recommend this birth control to anyone. Ever.

BEWARE OF VIORELE!!! I have been on many types of birth control (Azzurette, Ortho Tri-cyclin, etc.) for over a decade and this by far has had the worst side effects on my body. I am alarmed and horrified this drug is still being distributed despite over 100 negative reviews. The symptoms I've experienced in the last 3 weeks were restless joints, tingling, swelling, numbness, headaches, heart palpitations, and major fatigue. I thought I had some kind of termanal illness. I had every test done at the doctors only to have them tell me "I'm healthy"...I thought I was going insane. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS DRUG. BAD NEWS!!!! Read More Read Less

But I need to fix the spotting so going to higher dose sprintec.

When I first started birth control this was the pill that my doctor put me on. For the last two months it has literally ruined my life emotionally. I have cried everyday since I started the pill, for the stupidest reasons. My mood swings are out of control, I am constantly irritable, and I have been exhibiting depression like symptoms. It put a huge strain on the brand new relationship I was just beginning with a wonderful man. After two months of trying to adjust to this pill and hoping I would regain control of my life and my emotions, I'm done. Would never recommend this hell to anyone. Read More Read Less

Like other women's experiences of this drug, I was on Kariva for nearly ten years with no problems, it was fantastic. I took Kariva for birth control and for help with periods. Two weeks ago, I showed up at CVS for my refill, and the pharmacist looked me in my eye and told me Kariva had been discontinued. I was furious, as no one consulted me or my doctor (I called my doctor's office and they had no record of a phone call with the pharmacy). This pharmacist told me that she would give me an alternative pill and told me that it was the exact same- turns out it's Viorele. I couldn't risk being off the pill, so I took it. I have been so miserable from the first day of taking this pill- dizzy, headache, sore breasts, exhausted- in fact, I fell asleep during a conference last week! So unprofessional. Turns out, Kariva has NOT been discontinued! The pharmacy simply chose to stop carrying it. I am furious for being lied to and furious that a pharmacist would change my Rx without consulting my doctor. I already wrote a scathing review of CVS and switched my Rx to Ralphs, which has a plentiful supply of Kariva. CVS is disgusting and lies to patients- I felt like I had no control over my own body, and that is absolutely not ok. Read More Read Less

Birth control affects everyone differently, of course, and I'm not saying that everyone will have a bad experience with this drug. My experience, however, has been very poor. CVS switched me from Kariva to Viorele three months ago. I didn't expect any issues, and for the first month I didn't notice any difference. After that, I began to feel fatigued constantly, no matter how much I slept, or whether I exercised/worked or spent the day resting. I didn't attribute this to my birth control until I began spotting almost every single day of my active pills. Still, I thought it might be temporary, due to the recent switch. During the third month, in addition to fatigue and daily bleeding, I started feeling very anxious and tense, and would start worrying over absolutely nothing, to the point of tears. Individually, I'd attribute these symptoms to other things, but together, especially since I've been spotting every day, I've got to believe it's the birth control. I take it at exactly the same time every day (I set an alarm on my phone so I don't forget), so I know that isn't what's causing the breakthrough bleeding. I'm switching pharmacies ASAP and getting back on Kariva, or at least trying a different generic if I can't get a hold of that brand. I've taken Kariva for the past eight years and never had a single problem or side affect. I wish the pharmacy would just let me know ahead of time when they decide to switch my prescriptions.Read More Read Less
