I have been on Xarelto for one month. For the first 2 weeks I had no side effects but the longer I stay on it the more I have noticed that I am exhibiting symptoms I have never had. I am having muscle spasms around my eyes and eyelids. I have seen an opthalmologist and all is fine but they continue and are very annoying. I see that a side effect of this drug is muscle spasms. Also, I am itching a...
My family member suffered a fatal cerebral hemorrhage related to xarelto use. This drug should be banned!

Xarelto originally prescribed for irregular heart beat in January 2013, which turned out to be a misdiagnosis. Test in July 2013 revealed no irregularity, but drug was prescribed/administered January - July, 2013. By March 2013, after taking Xarelto for approximately 3 months, patient's legs had became so weak that patient needed a walker - which had never been necessary before. Balance was so compromised that individual could not stand or move easily and was no longer able to perform household chores, such as vacuuming and making the bed. General body weakness and decline in mobility progressed. In July 2013, the patient's physician stopped the Xarelto prescription. Patient had experienced frequent dizziness and eventually fell and was taken to emergency room. No broken bones, but extreme bruising (contusions)and severe aches/pains resulted, such that patient could not sleep, and so weak that normal movement was severely restricted. Relatively healthy individual was mobile in January 2013, and family believes that had he continued this Xarelto medication, he might have been immobile / requiring wheelchair by year end. Now in Sept. 2013, patient can stand for a few minutes without being so exhausted/weak, and is slowly showing progress - regaining ability to take short walks with a walker outside. The only factor that was different in these 6 months was taking Xarelto. Severe side effects ensued. Lots of marketing hype for this drug as being "better than" Coumadin and other competitors. Would urge anyone considering or on this medication to question the safety of this medication and to consult with objective, highly skilled physicians before taking.Read More Read Less

I started this in June 2013 even though I do not have persistent or permanent afib. I am female age 60 with hx of Type 1 DM x 32 yrs. Dr says this is what I need to prevent stroke. Scared me, so I started this. After about a month I began to get a bounding heart beat(but regular), increased anxiety from that, facial/scalp tingling like I got an anesthetic injection from the destist and bleeding gums. Dr felt was reaction to the antiarrhythmic and changed that to pill-in-th-pocket but kept me on xarelto. Says gum bleeding just part of it. :( More frequently, now, after taking I have bleeding gums and the tinglinglasting longer and longer. Also noted now, that heartburn more at night (take xarelto in evening) It is making me crazy and afraid. I am gong to talk with dr about changing this to another anticoag--even willing to try coumadin as I don't care if I need to monitor frequently. This is a scary drug. I am beginning to fear the other bleeding problems. Just creating more and more anxiety. As far as effectiveness--guess so, bleed a bit longer after getting blood draw. Bruised easily before so can't tell on that one.Read More Read Less

I just started taking this medication after being on Warfarin for 10 years. Not sure how it will work out. Just wanted to let others know that a discount card is available. Ask your physician or go on the internet through drug manufacture to inquire. I hope that not having to check my blood every couple weeks will offset the cost of the medication.

Been taking drug for two months as result of PFO related stroke, which see Patent Foramen Ovalaya, which is hole in heart that everyone has and normally should close by infancy. Many people don't realize they have one unless there is reason for doctors to test. Drug has advantages of much simpler to take them Coumadin, which requires regular blood tests. No dietary concerns either. Should ask your doctor about now ways to reverse effects without transfusion? Or so I am told by my doctors.

Xaretto was great for me used it for one year after I had heart surgery. No problems what so ever. Just had to stop taking other blood thinners. Some vitamins and minerals thin my blood so I had to quite taking them. I enjoyed not having to go to the doctor to check my blood like with other proscription blood thinners. I have recommended it to others.

Only been on it for a week, but have noticed fatigue and dizziness and feeling like I'm about to pass out while driving. Also have shortness of breath and blood shot eyes and headaches. Also don't like having to pay ten dollars a pill.

Experiencing black outs while driving and skin burning sensation on legs. I guess that better than wasting time trying to keep my INR at an acceptable level which is impossible since diet constantly changes it. Nevertheless outside of the constant burning of the skin and at the risk of blacking out during driving I guess it's better than being poked for blood every couple weeks.

I am beginning to be concerned re easy bruising (large) & very fragile skin. I hate this. 2 x 2 inch purple bruise from slight brush with drawer. I wonder if more follow-up would help. At least with the older drugs they have to follow up. Also, if I had realized how expensive I would have said "no".

From the first week my eyes wouldn't focus when switching from reading my phone to working on my computer, from distance to close work. My MD sent me to emergency thinking i could have a burst blood vessel in my brain. My eye doc said it was a common side effect. I didn't read about it in any of the paperwork on the med but slow focusing stayed with me throughout the six months I've been on the med. Hope they go back to normal now the clot is gone.
