After 11 years of coumadin (couldn't come close to maintaining INR control on generic warfarin), Pradaxa has been a wonderful change. No mixed dose strenghts, no monitoring, no drug or diet interactions, and my cardiologist tells me it is 35% more effective at preventing strokes and embolisms than warfarin (coumadin).

Just received my prescription from the Doctor. Not familiar with the treatment yet. Someone please tell me how do you get the pill out of the blister pack. My wife a half hour then we had to cut the pill out. not safe.

I've been on this medication for two months, and i take it with food. I have experienced a few of the worse side effects. Severe Intestional cramping. Rectal bleeding and severe pain anytime I have to go to the bathroom. I am also very tired while on this medicine. I've read up that it wasn't in trials for very long. I have completely discontinued this medicine and won't be taking it again.

Have been on Pradaxa for 14 mths. Take 150mg.twice daily for AFib. Found this drug effective and easy to use. But recently had to be taken off of the drug. For several days when I urinated, the toilet bowel was filled with bright, red blood. After stopping Pradaxa for almost 3 days, my urine returned to normal. I do not yet know what other drug will be prescribed for me but I am sure it will not be Pradaxa.

Started taking Pradaxa in June 2012. Had been on Jantoven/Coumadin since 12/08. Had no problems with Jantoven/Coumadin except for the quarterly testing expense. I watched my vitamin K intake and experienced NO side effects. Main reason for changing to Pradaxa was for the convenience of no testing or diet limitations. In the last 3 months I have experienced weakness in my limbs (more so in my arms & hands), blurred vision, acid indigestion, dizziness & overall fatigue. I changed my eating style in 9/09 and lost 50 pounds. In the last 3 months I also noticed weight gain (12#) that I can't seem to drop. I like to walk, usually a mile a day or more. I have found that it difficult to do so since my legs feel like they weigh 25# each. I am going ask my doctor to return me to Jantoven. I will have to have the quarterly testing expense, I will have to return to watching my diet, but I find that outlook a lot more appealing to what I have been experiencing these last 3 months. At least on Jantoven I had energy and no weaknesses. I could do virtually anything I wanted to then and I will return to it. My opinion: not all drugs are for everyone.Read More Read Less

I was hospitalized after using Pradaxa for 11 months, having some reactions all along, such as stomach upsets, joint aches and pains, rashes, dizziness, blurred vision and finally severe chest pains. Cardiologisti decided that "Pradaxa and you are not compatible. Then he placed me on Xarelto. I knew that I had gallstones but tried to delay surgery by staying on a no-fat diet. Eventually my doctors warned me that serious problems could arise if I needed emergency gallbladder surgery. After consultation with a critical care surgeon, he and my cardiologist worked together to wean me off Xarelto for 5 days prior to surgery. Two weeks ago today, I had a laparascopic cholecystectomy with no complications, no need for blood transfusions, no bleeding at the operative sites, and so far no hemorrhaging anywhere after surgery. I am greatly relieved, wounds have healed, and I think I am on my way to a great recovery. I did choose (with the consent of my cardiologist) to return to Coumadin (Jantoven) even though I do not particularly like the frequent testing. At 77 years of age, I feel that it is safer in case of a fall or accident or needed surgery. I did notice an increase in my arthritic and muscular pain while on both Pradaxa and Xarelto. Cost is also a factor to consider. I am not sure what the Jantoven will be per month once my dosage is leveled out, but I do know that using Pradaxa and Xarelto has put me in the "doughnut hole" with my Medicare drug plan for the last two months of 2012. Works better and allows less bloodflow from cuts. Small cuts used to make drip blood--with Pradaxa, the flow stops almost immediately.

WAS taking 150mg twice a day after a stroke. Severe side effects- I had them all...blood in stool, stomach pain, nausea, dizziness. I felt terrible. Had colonoscopy to see about blood discharge and was taken off Pradaxa prior to test. After a few days felt so much better, but went back on it and same side effects popped up. Consulted doctors and they took me off it. Feeling great again now. Drug may be good for what it is suppose to do, but side effects were horrible...quality of life issues for me were more important.Read More Read Less

My DH has had virtually 90% of the side effects shown on previous page and almost died; has had 4 units of blood transfused, so far. Started it in 1/12 and came crashing down 8/12. He was also just diagnosed today with a torn retina (coincidence??? Don't know.) He has been so ill but now slowly getting better. Severe itching, rash, nausea, diag. with bleeding ulcers in stomach and esophagus after having a Endoscopy due to all the pain. Gained 18# of fluid in a week and was so swollen. This drug is simply dangerous for so many.Read More Read Less

I have been on Pradaxa for one year and love it's convenience. Only side effects are heartburn at night and waves of excessive perspiration. Take it with milk at supper to prevent heartburn.

Pradaxa was easy to use and didn't require frequent blood tests but caused extreme exhaustion which I didn't associate with the drug for 6 weeks until my doctor suggested I stop taking it and within 5 days felt much better and in 10 days had regained all my energy. I am happier with warfarin and blood tests!

Diagnosed with A Fib 7 months ago. Started on Pradaxa to keep blood thin and possibly, and hopefully, prevent clot from causing a stroke. I also had two electrical Cardioversions, that required my taking and staying on Pradaxa. I take Pradaxa two times a day...spaced 12 hours apart. I find I must eat something with it or become very uncomfortable with indigestion and burping. I do like that there's no food restrictions or frequent blood tests with this med. This will be a 'forever' med for me because of the A-Fib. I carry my medicine info with me in my wallet. The scary part of this med, is the potential bleeding issue. Ask your pharmacist and doctor questions as to any other med you take interfering with this med. Ask and be aware of any drug interactions that might effect you. Be pro-active. Read More Read Less

For me, Pradaxa (Pdx) is good news, bad news. I've been on and off and on coumadin since 2004. With Pdx, since January-20011, no more occasional "whooosing" in my chest from afib; no more special diets; no more weekly pin pricks; no more arranging my personal schedule around my pin pricks****Bad news**** blood became too thin (last 3 months on Pdx meant that I ALWAYS had to sleep with my legs covered; had to devise a method to take my 2 doses daily of Pdx (the special bottle became a real pain); swelling of feet(it progressively got worse and worse); I had to take extra medication to counteract the swelling (it gradually became less and less effective); tests showed that my kidney function was being affected (which, it seems, is a side effect of Pdx for SOME patients); I was diagnosed with Kidney cancer in both kidneys in 2003; I was diagnosed with gout in Feb. of 2011, a few weeks after starting my Pdx regimen. I am urinating better, nowRead More Read Less

I have been taking this 9 months. When I first started for about a month I had dizziness, nausea, and blurred vision. Since then it has improved, none of these symtoms but I do have trouble urinating. I could be caused by the other drug propafenone. Would like to know if anyone else has this problem.

I had a small stroke and my Cardiologist put me on Pradaxa. Having great difficulty with this drug. Stomach pain, blood in stool/hemorrhoids...and the cost of this drug is ridiculous! Doc says I need it, but will need to find something else. Even after Ins this just makes our budget worse. Coumadin seems to have same issues & side effects...Daily aspirin may be easier to tolerate.
