I was prescribed this med to treat chronic pain after several spinal surgeries. At first I didn't notice anything except for lightheadedness. After about a month and a half there was noticeable relief during the time I would take a pill compared to unmedicated time. I take 100mg x 4 day and I feel that after this med built up in my system it actually worked. I did have to appeal to my insurance company to approve the cost of this med. All-in-all I have to say that it has worked better than other meds that I have used during these years of surgeries.Read More Read Less

50 year old male, veteran of the armed forces with PRMS and chronic pain since 2002. My neurologist had me on MS Contin for 5+ years and subsequently developed huge opioid tolerance. I was taking 250mg a day just so I could go to work and make it through the day. Eventually the MS took its toll and I was forced to retire. Shortly thereafter, my neurologist retired and his replacement was anti-opioid and immediately began weaning me off narcotic pain medication. Period. Long story short, my MS worsened and the pain became so unbearable, I found myself back on narcotics, however this time I was not able to find a civilian doctor who understood the opioid tolerance I had built up over the years and subsequently would not prescribe medication (OXYCOTIN, HYDROMORPHONE etc.,)in high enough dose to treat my pain. I felt really uncomfortable and truly believed my doctor thought I was abusing the medication and/or was requesting higher dosages so I could sell them on the market. I retired to Florida after serving 20+ years overseas and had no idea there was an epidemic of narcotic abuse caused by so called "pill mills". I was lucky and found a pain management specialist who performed RF ablasion therapy on my spine and introduced me to Nucynta in June of 2012. Since then, I have been on (1ea.) 200mg ER every 12 hours, and (1ea.) 75mg tablet every 6 hours for breakthrough pain. It took several months to get the dosage adjusted to current levels and I am happy to report I am pain free and am experiencing little or no side effects compared to opioids. The withdrawal from strictly opioid pain management is horrible and I actually felt like a "junkie" you see on TV or in a movie. I have read the reviews on this site and others stating Nucynta does not work for pain. I can only say from my long arduous journey with narcotics that it does work and the people who say it doesn't work are simply addicted to the buzz from opioids and are not willing to seek any other alternatives. not only was this difficult for me to get (had to wait 5 days for my pharmacy to get it in) it was expensive even with a manufacturer coupon. I found no relief whatsoever from pain caused by my MS/nerve pain.

I have been prescribed this drug by my doctor to try as an alternative to Oxycodone, to treat severe migraine pain. I found that it was ineffective on migraines, by provided a little relief for the chronic pain I suffer daily from MS and fibromyalgia. I did not encounter the severe side effects of nausea and dizziness like the other reviewer. I have experienced weight gain and hair loss. It is very expensive. My doctor told me that this drug was very new (only on the market since July 2009)and he has had spotty success with it, but asked me to give it a try for a month. I will be asking for something different at my appointment this week.Read More Read Less

I’ve been suffering from chronic, sever daily headaches for over 2 years. I was prescribed this drug as an alternative to oxycodone because my doctor wanted to try something with a lower amount of narcotic in it. I had a horrible experience with this medicine. First of all, I spent about 2 hours just trying to find a pharmacy that had it in stock. CVS didn't even have this entered into their system yet! Once I found it, my cost came to $180...and I had insurance! Its non-formulary so they only paid a percentage. Without insurance it was more than $400 for 90 pills. So after all that hassle, the medicine had terrible side effects. I was taking 75mg 4x a day. My doctor said it was supposed to have less nausea than other opioids, but I had it much worse than I ever had on oxycodone. It made me feel like I was drunk b/c I was so incredibly dizzy. I was so nauseous and sick I was stuck on the couch. I had to stop taking it b/c I didn’t feel comfortable driving or going to work. My doc said it takes about 2 weeks to get used to it, but I could only get through a week. My doc switched me back but they had to dispose of it b/c it’s a narcotic so I wasted almost $200. My doc said they’ve had many of the same reports from other patients - no one could stand it long enough to adjust and ended up switching back to their old medicine. And on top of all that, I had 0 pain relief and my headaches were worse than before. Overall, not a good experience. Hopefully they'll improve on this drug or just pull it all together. Maybe you'll have better luck or at least some pain relief.Read More Read Less
