I've been taking this for a little over a month now. My heart rate and blood pressure have both dropped greatly. Here's the downside, I have become very tired and sluggish and have been packing on the pounds like a bear preparing for winter.

After taking this med just once (5mg) I felt horrible. I am presently taking Depakote for anxiety/panic attacks which already slows me down and to take Bystolic made me feel like a zombie. Even my wife was asking if I was alright. Stopped after only one pill until I can consult with my other doctor that prescribes the Depakote. I was WAY too mellow taking both. I could see myself at work taking both and getting nothing done. Searching this site for a better solution and reading the reviews on other beta blockers.Read More Read Less

I have been on Bystolic for about 3 1/2 months and have experienced little side effects I could say for sure was from Bystolic. I have been cold on occasions, dry mouth, slow pulse rate, weakness. I am also taking Clonidine so these symtons could be from either drug.

I’ve had experiences with quite a few beta blockers over the past few years. All the Bystolic hype about being third generation etc. is rubbish. It provides vasodilation and is beta1 specific, so are many other beta blockers. (If you read the sites Prescribing information for this medication it causes Leydig Cell and SPERM cell damage.)The least side effect claims are all marketing ploys. This pill known as Nebivolol (BYSTOLIC)has been around in Europe since the early 1990’s. The same time period as TOPROL, ZEBETA and KERLONE. It is not that new and drug companies shouldn’t exagerate or twist the facts. I can say that Bystolic definitely has it’s share of side effects, including water retention, sexual dysfunction, forgetfullnes, increases in Cholesterol and Glucose levels and worst of all, Increased Liver enzymes. The best and safest choice for a beta blocker which I have been currently taking is KERLONE, known as BETAXOLOL. Compared to other beta blockers it is pretty remarkable, though not advertised or very popular. Best of all no sexual side effects, less joint pain, and better sleep patterns. Read More Read Less

To be effective I would need a dose higher than I would like. The side effects, especially the dizziness, nausea, headaches, restless sleep and feeling faint were too hard to handle for me. On the positive side, taking only 2.5 mg every morning did slow my heart rate down 15-20 beats per minute. However, it did not lower my blood pressure at all.

The medication is causing me to feel like I can't get enough air. It is also causing me to itch but for some reason the Dr. wants me to stay on this medicine.

I have been trying for a long time to find a blood pressure medicine that does not cause severe reactions. I was on amiloride for a year and went to er with hypoentremia. Tekturna made my hair fall out. Methyldopa sent my liver enzymes off the chart and made me very ill. The dr. wants to start me on bystolic, but I have asthma and I am reluctant to go on it. Does anyone have any suggestions. I have tried at least 15 medications so far and I have had adverse reactions to them all.

Believe or it not, I have been fighting my blood pressure for 2+ years. At the age of 35, I could not control it any longer. This is literally the 12th medication I have been prescribed in 2 years. The 10mg per day has lowered my blood pressure from stroke level, but it is not low enough. Does anyone have any suggestions?? Keep in mind I am deadly allergic to sulfa, penicillan, iodine, and ace-inhibitors. The 4th medicine, Lisinopril (sp) put me ICU for 4 days and almost took my life. Also, has anyone experienced hair loss with the bystolic?? I know it sounds odd, but I'm starting to notice some. Not the thyroid either......just had full panel done 2 weeks ago. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.Read More Read Less

I began taking this drug about 6 months ago. I was on Toprol XL before. It has worked relatively well, but between the two, I am probably going to go back on Toprol. The main side effects of this drug for me have been lack of sleep. I have gone from 7-8 hours per night to 4-5 and that lack of sleep is causing headaches and other problems. I have gained weight, and have had heartbeat irregularities. Some of that has subsided in the past month because of a reduced stress level, but notice that the condition returns under certain stress conditions. All in all, I think it is an excellent drug for BP control, but just not as effective for me as Toprol. I also had side effects with Toprol of fatigue and weakness, but never tested poorly on liver tests. Between the two, I would take Toprol and getting more sleep.Read More Read Less

It's a little over a month that I've been on Bystolic. It seems to be working. I went on vacation and missed 3 ddays....I thought I was going to die. I finally got the meds.....the pressure went down. The side effects that I'm having is a lot of chest pain. It felt like my heart was just not working right. On New Years I had to go to the ER because of severe chest pain......the paidn started going down my arm and on the left side at that. My pressure was 161/94.......it's still up...conclusion is I'm not sure if it's working at this point...will find out tomorrow when I go back to the Dr.Read More Read Less

I was prescribed 5 mg. Bystolic to control my blood pressure (130+/80+) and to lower my pulse rate (80-100+, with 70+ being normal). Overnight it worked to bring my readings down to well within normal ranges. The only problem I had was that the first week I took it, the following day I would suddenly go to sleep without warning, alarming to say the least. As instructed, I took half a tablet instead, and still got the full effect of the medication without the odd side effect. It's nice to no longer feel my heart/pulse racing or worry about my BP -- a wonder drug!Read More Read Less

I had numerous side effects for the first 3-4 months with Bystolic, but all but one has subsided: it does make my sleeping very light, and I often can't sleep more than 5 hours. Consequently, my doctor prescribed an SSRI anti-depressant, Lexapro, which completely regulates my seratonin and makes me sleep well. Otherwise, Bystolic is great and has completely lowered my BP.
