Vyvanse is a new drug on the market the is very similair to Adderall XR. Like any ADHD medication, this drug does raise one's heart rate and will have an affect on one's stomach. Something that I do is open up the capsule and pour the contents into apple sauce. The mixture of the food and the medication makes it a lot easier on the stomach. The common misconception is that you need the capsule, bu...

Story: I had taken 20MGs Vyvanse as a kid for ADHD, it worked great and soon I was the smartest kid in my whole class, eventually it just stopped working around middle school so I stopped taking it, and my grades went back down to being barely passing. Sophomore year in Highschool, I decided to try it again because I was failing all my classes because I could never stay focused in class, I asked m...

After many concentration problems at school, my son was disgnosed with ADHD and started on 20mg of vyvanse. It has been very effective for about about 6-7 hours but after that he crashes and experiences uncontrollable anger and frustration for about an hour then settles down. We have been advised to up the dosage to 30mg to extend the crash to later in the day.

My son began taking this med after being diagnosed with ADD as a Jr. in high school. Before prescribing the Dr. had my son, me and his teachers complete the Vanderbuilt Test to confirm his diagnosis. The Dr. prescribed 20mg to start and at the first followup refused to increase the dosage since my son had lost weight. At the second followup, my son had regained the lost weight, so the Dr. increased the dosage to 30mg. Like others in this forum, my son complained of it wearing off before the end of the school day. My son is not having problems sleeping and I have made a bedtime snack a ritual to keep him from losing weight, which he can't afford to do. My son is not angry or aggressive when it wears off, which is sometime around dinner time. We go back for another followup in 2 months. My son's Dr. recommends Vyvanse at the smallest dosage and then through followup visits, begin "tweaking" the dosage if necessary. After reading some of the other comments here, I think this is the best approach. The Dr. also wants him to take it on the weekends, even if we have to wake him to take it. The Dr. believes in consistency. My son's grades improved dramatically. His ability to focus improved dramatically. His teachers have commented on how they can't believe this is the same teenager they had in class since last Aug. At home, his mood has gone from sullen, combative and dark to a cheerfulness and contentment we had seen for 2 yrs. He engages in conservations with us again and has rediscovered his potential. I highly recommend this medication, but I recommend starting out with the lowest dosage and then increasing it if it seems to be wearing off too quickly and weight loss is not an issue. I believe my son's Dr. has done a fabulous job in working with my son with this medication and by doing so, my son avoided some of the pitfalls others in this section experienced.Read More Read Less

My oldest son (now 21)had ADHD, He was medicated his entire school aged year- on various drugs.(I hated it) I noticed signs with my younger son over the years and really found he was just ADD so I tried not to medicate him because I hate the thought of my kids taking these meds. Anyhow by middle school my younger son was dealing with poor concentration, bad grades & being very over weight he just seemed depressed. So I took him to his Doctor for help and he perscribed Vyvanse. My Son's grades the first year changed dramatically! and he lost like 50lbs. He also went thru puberty during this time. He is transformed! WOW I am a bit worried because he does show signs of being dependant, he never forgets it,even takes it on the weekends, when i try to get him to back off it at times when its not needed, checks how many pills he has left, gets nervous if he runs low.. I really think now he is horrified that he will gain all his weight back if he stops it. Read More Read Less

I am a 28 yr old stay at home mom (was at start of usage) who was having trouble balancing it all while husband worked on the road and started off with 20mg of Vyvanse. I eventually was bumped up to the 70mg. After 12 mos of using I didn't even know myself & neither did anyone else. I was irritable, having psychotic episodes and went from 135 lbs to 95 (I am 5'7'') My family was scared to even be around me b/c I could not hold a straight thought or conversation! I don't even remember our family trip from 2008! My husband finally researched this medication and I have been off since 01/2009. I had the worst withdrawals and eventually had to go to a mental facility for a few days (where they tried to give me more) They had to put me on severe anxiety medicine which I don't take anymore. I lost 2 years with my family that I will never get back and warn all mothers and people that I know to stay as far away from this as possible! I am scared to take anything stronger than ibuprofen these days. Yes, to the mother who is worried about sleep walking in her son! Side effect...you bet! I have almost gotten a divorce due to my behavior while on this medication and strongly advise against any usage. I have heard several people say it is great for weight loss which may be true but the things you lose along with your weight can never be recovered. Please share my story with anyone you know. I have been debating suing my psychiatrist for continuing to bump up my dosage when I looked like if I turned sideways I would dissappear, which some people actually said to me.Read More Read Less

my 7 year old boy was diagnosed and vyvanse 20mg was the first one to try. it works great at school. but anytime after school it can wear off and cause him to explode with anger. it is really shocking how it works well at school and after can trigger him to such anger. though the anger is for a short time the severity is the worst you can imagine. hitting, scratching, kicking, yelling. i know he is suffering at this point. we have an appointment in 2 days and i hope we will try another type. this med can't be right for him.Read More Read Less

My son was diagnosed with ADHD inattentive type. He was on adderall for a month and had trouble sleeping. So they switched him to Vyvanse 20mg. Well I had to pick him up from school the first day of use. His hands were twitching uncontrollably, breathing heavily, itching and his heart was racing. I have never been so scared! I wouldn't of even put him on medication other than his grades have been affected. I just want to warn anyone that puts their child on this medication to be aware of adverse side effects. My son has always been healthy and never had a reaction to any medication.Read More Read Less

I've been taking Vyvanse for a while and love it. It's less hardcore than Adderall XR, but it doesn't make me hate myself after a few days like Adderall does. The length of effectiveness (per day) is less than Adderall, but it does help give me that bit that I've been lacking as someone with Inattentive Type ADHD

I am 50 year old female. I have had ADD for years, finally got a physician to treat me for it. I have been on the medication for 6 months, and I love my life again. I think clearer than ever before. It feels great to really concentrate on something. I do know when it wares off every day, but I have been able to adjust it to make it let me sleep just fine. I feel so good I am going back to college to learn more!!!!

I am a 23 yr old female, who started vyvanse 1 month ago after learning I have adult on set ADD. It does work well, and helps me focus. The only problem I have with this med. is that it does wear off sooner than it is suppose to which makes me grumpy.

I am 16 and was diagnosed with ADD in october this year. i started on 40mg and it worked great, my gpa skyrocketed and everything got easier but it wore off quickly so the doctor switched me to 50mg. I started not being aboe to sleep and it got to the point where i was only getting 4 hours of sleep a night. I also lost my apitite compleatly. It worked well at first, and i would reccommend trying it, but keep open to other options.

Over the past year or so I started forgetting things or losing concentration easily so I talked to my doctor about these issues and this is what she prescribed. Since I started taking it I instantly noticed a difference in my ability to stay focused. This is the first ADHD drug I've taken so I can't compare it to anything else. I feel like a new 'me' and I love it. I am so much more productive than ever and that alone brings great satisfaction overall. It didn't change my positive attitude or up beat ways it just enhanced it! Read More Read Less

Vyvanse was not so pleasant. After half the pill wears off then you have some side effects. My stomach would hurt and I could never get enough to eat. Then it would slowly unglue the rest of the pill. That was ok but it would come down and then I would get so hungry again. Finally I would take two. Usually I found myself driving around hospital parking lots by this time.
