After reading all the reviews I was scared to take this. So, I made sure to drink a full glass of water before I took it and right before bed. I took it with lunch and with dinner, in the middle of the meal. I never experienced any symptoms and took two a day for one week.

DO NOT take this if you are allergic to sulfa drugs. I only took for two days and I had a severe allergic reaction to this medicine. My eyes started turning black/purple....looked like I had not slept in weeks. Chills so bad my teeth chattered and my entire body was shaking. Excruciating body aches all over my body, as if my muscles were being ripped out of my body and I started having a horrible...

It cleared up my UTI temporarily but while I was taking the medication I felt like I had been hit by a truck. I was achey, woozy, exhausted, nauseous, and I had trouble concentrating. It was horrible. I have never experienced any of these side effects from other antibiotics and to add insult to injury, a week and a half after stopping, the UTI was back. Never taking this medication again.

This medication is horrible. I have a terrible UTI, when I started taking the medication if felt that my UTI was getting better but on the 4th day it felt like my UTI was back. Ive been noticing how exhausted and tired Ive been feeling. It kills my stomach and I have been taking a florstor with it so I dont get a yeast infection. At night its the worst I feel like I have the flu. Chills, cant warm up not hungry but during the day Im starving. Now I feel heavy in chest and Wish I could go home from work but I cant. I would like to lay my head down on my desk. Horrible medication waiting for my doctor to prescribe something else. I guess the guy in the walk in clinic thought it would be good. Read More Read Less

Pretty much the same as the rest of these reviews. I feel horrible; body aches, nausea, bad back and abdominal pains, fatigue, headache, I mean do I even need to go on. After 2 days out of the prescribed 5 I'm done. Calling my doctor first thing to get something else! Stay away from this drug it is the devil!

I've taken this medication for 4 days this time and I'm nauseous, diarrhea, numbness and tingling in my fingers, my right arm feels like I have a torn muscle-can't use it. Have aching and soreness through my entire body. The UTI is really bad, but I can't take this medicine anymore, I feel like it's killing me. It's worse than levaquin and I'm still having side effects from taking it in 2011. I've told dr repeatedly that it makes me sick , but they say it's the only thing that works on my bacteria. I'm allergic to most antibiotics. Won't take it anymore.Read More Read Less

I experienced severe shortness of breath on this medication and was actually hospitalized. The emergency room doctor diagnosed me as having pneumonia and wasn't even interested in the drug I was taking. This was 2 years ago. I was recently was given the same medication for a uti because there was never an established reaction. when I experienced the same shortness of breath I myself connected it to the earlier episode where I was hospitalized for a 6 days. There should be severe warning on the label about breathing problems. I was diagnosed with copd and wonder if the first episode did not help with bringing it on.the prescription bottle and it only reads tp take with milk or food, may cause discoloration of urine, and may cause drowsiness - nothing about breathing problemsRead More Read Less

I was prescribed this medication by my urologist. I have 8 kidney stones in my right kidney that are causing constant UTI's. So he told me to take 1 cap before bed with lots of milk for 6 months. I took it the first night and woke up with a sore throat. I thought nothing of it because I work in a doctor's office and my fiance is sick and I figured I was coming down with a head cold or something. I took it the 2nd night and couldn't sleep cause I felt like crap. I finally fell asleep and woke up feeling like I had been hit by a bus. When I stood up, I became nauseous and ran to the bathroom and blood came up. I freaked out and rushed to my doctor's office. My face was broken out. They did a strep culture which proved negative. After I told her what I was taking, she did some resource and found out that this medication can drop your platelet level and cause internal bleeding. So I got my blood taken and I'm waiting for the results. She said if it's critically low, that she's going to admit me to the hospital. I have NEVER had a side effect on any type of antibiotic before this one. Read More Read Less

I took it 2 times a day with no side effects and got rid of uti... I would advice everyone to go for urine culture test before trying any antibiotics because a urine culture test reports you about the antibiotic that will be effevtive to your situation.. stay blessed :)

Was given this medicine as a fourth line of treatment where other antibiotics have failed. The only sides effects I seem to have is going to the toilet more frequently although not as bad as diarrhoea. Also slight loss of appetite within the following hour after taking a dose. Otherwise ok. Hoping this clears up my painful UTI.

Have taken only 3 doses for a UTI and will not take anymore, last night started with shortness of breath, I am extremely tired and dizzy, and tingly, cannot make it into work. This is worse than the UTI, waiting for a call back from my doctor to change to something else. The side effects are terrible. It really should not be prescribed after seeing so many negative reviews.

I've suffered from UTI's for a number of years now, been to nearly every urologist in the south east and have tried nearly every antibiotic on the market, and some of them actually work...until my body builds up some form of resistance and I'm back to sleepless nights and sexless (much to my partners dislike.) Anyway! So 3 days ago now my GP prescribed nitrofurantoin, not one I'd come across before. I'm on 4 a day dosage for 7 days to be taken with food. It took me until my 3rd pill on the first day to start feeling the side effects. Now, usually I have a high tolerance to anything so was surprised when I started to feel the reactions. 1) Strange looking neonish urine! 2) Dizziness 3) Cold & Flu like symptoms - Chills, cough , weakness, muscle pain 4) Then the nausea and the odd vomiting On the upside the UTI symptoms seem to have subsided, which is a result. Despite the horrible side effects it gave me Nitrofurantoin works, for the time being anyway. Read More Read Less

Hate taking any meds but this had pretty much no side effects and felt a lot better after first dose. I am on it for 3 days 50mg 4 times a day. I am on day 2 and it has made me feel lots better so far. I took it a few years ago and had the same experience then.

I prescribed 2 times a day 100mg this is the worst drug. I have completed 4 days and it just makes you feel crappy. I think the UTI is going away but you can't tell because the urine is brownish to light red. I won't take it again if prescribed. I am glad I read the reviews because I will call tomorrow to complain to my doctor. Makes me feel like a test subject without volunteering.

This drug has been a complete nightmare. I only took it for two days and ended up in bed couldn't even function . Second day back at the doctors office. Had severe bodyaches, headaches, fever, chills, cough, nausea, leg pain, trouble breathing and no appetite. I thought I was dying. I will never take this again. The doctor changed it to Bactrim. Hadn't started it yet, scared to take anything now. They seriously need to banned this drug. Wish I would've read the reviews first. Would've saved me a whole lot of pain and another doctor's visit.Read More Read Less

Been taking 5 days so far. While painful urination is improved, it is not completely cleared up. Starting today, I am nauseous, have diarrhea, mild headache, and general malaise.

This is the worst medication I have ever taken. It was prescribed to me last year and I had to stop taking it because of nausea, abdominal pain and diahrea. It was again prescribed to me this year and I didn't realize that it was the same med as last year and took 1 pill at nite and took another this morning. I am so sick to my stomarch, adominal pain, nausea and general malaise. I called my doctor immediately and told them to put on my chart to never prescribe it again.

Well the antibiotics got rid of the UTI, but left me with the most god awful side effects. I took it for a week, and a few days in the headaches, nausea, tingling of arms/legs/feet began. I began to feel feverish and dehydrated, so I went to the ER. After seven hours waiting in the ER, the doctor told me this was definitely side effects of the drug because my blood work showed no signs of anything else (and my UTI was gone.) It is now three days after taking the final pill and I'm still getting awful chills and muscle weakness. I just want to cry. I need to detox this awfulness out of me. Lesson learned: always read reviews on medications! Don't just do something because a doctor tells you to. You know your body best, so do your own personal research. Read More Read Less

After taking only 1 dose I ended up in the ER with SEVERE all over body pain, pounding headache, chills, fever, severe abdominal pain, enflamed liver. After stopping the medication and having a full day without the medication I feel weak, dizzy, and as if I have been beaten.

My mother has chronic UTI's, she had a stroke dec 2014, she can not talk or communicate other than just watching how she acts. She has been on this medicine 1 week. She is extremely tired, can not hold herself upright, moans constantly, won't eat and if I do get her to put food in her mouth it will still be there 15 min later, and because she can not speak, when I call the doctor and tell him how she is acting, he tells me that its probably something else that is making her feel that way and maybe I should take her to the ER. He says that the lab determines what medicine to give her from the culture that grewRead More Read Less
