I have been using the patch 5omcg now for about 6 months. I cant get the things to stay on.And I don't think the dose I am on is strong enough. I started out with 25mcg and they bumped me up to 50 within the first visit. Its now been 4months and after about 48hrs if i can even keep them on with tape they just don't seem to work. I almost start going into immediate withdrawls. And I ache all over again. I want to go up to the 75mcg and i want to be able to keep them on so that I can tell if they'll actually help. I do not take anything for breakthrough pain, and that might be part of the problem too. But how do i tell my Dr. that? He thinks everyone is out for the high. I just want my painfree life back so so so bad. So does my Husband and Grandchildren.Read More Read Less

I felt no control over the amount I needed . I was doing stupid things and ended up having to relie on other people to tell me when I was high.As I did not feel it. It was hell to get off of it. I found another Doctor with a more conservative approach. He got me tolerable relief ,and I did not take as much on the days I did not need as much.

I have severe pain, migraines, and fibomyalgia. Started at 12.5 and now at 50 after one year.it does help but also take hydocodone 10/325 up to 10 a day. Iam 27 and cannot work. my doc lets me change patches every 48hrs as they do not last 72 as they claim. also use tape to keep on as they fall off. they are horrible to get off as i tried twice and felt like i was dying. need to be carful while using around children, i sleep with a shirt on to avoid contact by my 4yr old son. biggest problem is sweating. I have also went from large amounts of pain pills to the patches after a failed back surgery. I have been wearing the patches for 3 yrs. What I want those who need this medication but don't have insurance to know is that the company that makes the patch- Jannsen has a program for indigent needs. I needed this while waiting for my disability for 2 years, they will send you the forms, takes about a month to get accepted but it's worth the time. God bless Jannsen

After last surgery, myopathy, neuropathy, 5-hernations, spinal stenosis I have been on the brand name Duragesic 1.5yrs. 75 mcg/60hrs, does not last 72hrs no matter what they say. Pain sees to be decreasing causing they mediaction to increase, switching to 50 mcg/60hrs. Side effects: heart racing(especially after first changing patch), that night I will not sleep. Difficulting breathing as if my lungs are restricted, feeling as if any breath could be your last, unable to do much without having to stop to recooperate. Great drug for nerve pain but as scarry as they get. If your doctor won't listen to your concerns-find another doctor. The longer you need to stay of this medication the worse the side effects will become, in my opinion. Pope to free from this med in the next few months.Read More Read Less

I never took the medication but my mom did. She was overweight and needed surgery to correct herniated discs in her lower back. Because of her back pain, she couldnt exercise to lose weight and the drs refused to do surgery until she reached a specific weight. In a nut shell, she died. She was taking up to 500mcg of the drug. She started at 50 and went up to 500 in less than 5/6 days. Before leaving the hospital she went back down to 300 and stayed on that for about 1wk.She died 21 days later and my family and I believe it was because of this patch and its potent effect on your body. She had many symptoms that went undiagnosed by the doctors. Please be careful taking this drug.I dont want anyone else to lose someone so special to them like my family and I did. My mom was 45.Read More Read Less

The patch has been more effective than oral meds. The fear of abuse is much more with pills than with patches. I found myself taking more and more pills more and more frequently. With patches atleast I know a small quantity is being absorbed at all times. If I try to put more than 1 patch on, nausea stops that from occuring. After 20 years of constant neck, back, leg and foot pain, the patch is the best drug I have found.

Seeing the previous post I can answer that.I started off at the 25 to the 100 with 25 at the 48 hr mark. You may have had the same reason as I did the immediate withdrawal when your body has become tolerant. It will not be easy, but I yell at you do it. It takes months and you have to go down a dosage at a time. I am just coming off the 25 from coming down basically 125. It was not easy and I actually had a TIA stroke. There will be hot cold flashes teeth chattering and yes pain unless your Dr. gives enough appriate break thru meds to help for you to handle that I'm going on the oxys because I feel there is more control taking the pill even though I'll have to be more aware of my liver kidneys etc. Please, please do this I think unless you're terminal much older I'm 51 stay away from the patches they do their job but when you are long term pain pt wait wait wait before going on the patches.Read More Read Less

I write this with the intention to share my experiences with the highly potent and very addictive medication, Fentanyl. I myself use the Duragesic Patches (by Janssen), I have found through trail and error that the patches Fentanyl (the Generic brands by other companies just don't have the same Strength or potency as this brand name I use). I have unfortunately been on the patches for what seems like forever (6 years, or so). I started at 25mcg/h every 72 hours, I am now on 100mcg/h every 48 hours, (it seems like I'm changing them everyday). Now my sorrow and my advice to you. I have been taking these as a combination of a lower back fusion, and as rheumatoid arthritis spreads through my entire body, enough said about that sad stuff. My advice to you that are just making or about to make, first keep in mind as time goes by it will become harder and harder to wean off of this "MONSTER DRUG". I now find myself in a baddddddd situation as I continue to ask my doctor how I can get off of these patches. He hesitates as he doesn't want to give the news I actually know of already! After the years on the paths, and the high dosages I've been on for the years, he told me "I would be afraid to think about that, but he also has told me, if I wanted to give it a go he's in, I'm the one that is going to go through it! If there is someone that perhaps has been through similar situation and has been successful and weaning off such a high dose and number of years on the patch, would you please write me back with your story. I have chosen the Patches over the likes of Valium, Vicodin, and Percocet. Do you think I made a mistake and should have stuck with the pills? Anyone including doctors please voice your opinions, I welcome them all! Thanks for listening to my story. Remember the pain will still be there, and I have a very high addictive behavior (pills)? Thanks again. Read More Read Less

I am thankful for this med,I have severe health issues due to being kidnapped in 2005, I also have fibromialgia & neuropathy and it does'nt help alot with it but I still take norco 10mg or loratab 10mg for breakthrough, so far I have been blessed to be able to stay on only 50 mcg's per 72 hrs. I can say to all out there who are suffering and in pain please dont give up there is help, I found mine. The 1 thing bad I can say is this lol I cant seem to keep them from bunching up on me no matter what kind of tape I try, I even have the overlays for them and believe it or not they can still slightly bunch up underneath, but I am very satisfied with the pain control this medication has given me. Feel better everyone, God Bless .Read More Read Less

I'm on Duragesic 50 mcg every 72 hrs. I too agree that after 48 hrs it seens to be less affective. When I wake up in the morning I'm not sure what day it is or what I'm supposed to be doing today. My breathing seems to be shallow, I have a Dr. appt tommorrow and will be talking to my Dr about these side affects. I'm concerned about the addiction to these patches and what I'll be going through when and if my pain subsides. My surgery for Rotator cuff is scheduled for 12/30/08. Even though I have other problems pain wise, this is what has been screaming at me the loudest the past 14 mos.Read More Read Less

I have had chronic pain due to lumbar stenosis, spondylthesis and 3 bulging discs for at least 2 years. My physician was afraid of dependence and would only give me a few Vicodin every month. I finally changed physicians and he started me on 50 mcg. I have had so much relief! I can finally turn on my sides during sleep without excrutiating pain and spasms. The first few days were difficult adjusting to the med, but the benefits far out-weigh the adjustment period. The only problem I have is keeping the patch on. I will be trying tegaderm or a surgical tape. I am thrilled with my pain relief.Read More Read Less

I have been using RX painmeds for about 13 years and only started the Duragesic one week ago. It is a God send! I had spinal surgery 23 years ago and now have 2 more bulging discs, stenosis and arthritis as well as scar tissue from the previous surgery. I had a staph infection in the surgical incision while in the hospital that has caused bad nerve damage. I also have had rotator cuff surgery that never relieved the pain due to insurance refusing to pay until I did everything else including physical therapy for almost a year after injury. I lost about 20% mobility and large amount of strength in that arm. I have been taking 90 Oxycontin a month and running out before the month ended and still could not work. Since starting the patch I have only been taking 2 ibuprofen twice daily. The glue REALLY needs to be better, that is only problem I have had. Read More Read Less
