After trying 4 other drugs for depression, I finally got on this; and it works great! Depression has subsided, and I sleep much better and rise without a "hangover" feeling. No side effects that I can tell.

I have been taking 15mg for about 4 months now...along with paroxetine. At 1st it was great! The best sleep I've had in 2 years, but I have gained over 20 lbs and last week cut the pills in half...if I get less than 12 hours of sleep I feel extremely groggy and irritable most of the day! But even with the half dose, I am usually tired all day at work....did not take any last night and feel great!! Also feel like I have less energy than I should, and low to no sex drive. Will be talking to my doc about changing this prescription... do not like the side effects.Read More Read Less

Basically started taking this because of intense and prolonged insomnia. Several years of insomnia both before and after I divorced four years ago. I wouldn't call myself depressed but an extremely busy mind and some major spikes in anxiety keeps me awake unless I'm working out in the woods. I also have anger issues. Well. I'm sleeping very deeply now and my concentration has gone up and anger has subsided - although I did see a therapist during this as well, so I'm not sure what's causing the subsidence in anger. Seems like it creeps back when I go on "drug-holidays". My weight hasn't fluctuated much. I'm a runner and frequently my work takes me into outdoor, backcountry environments so I'm always burning calories. Not sure I notice an extreme increase in what has always been an active appetite.Thee has been some. The dreams are pretty intense and interesting. I relish being able to dream deeply. Sometimes they get disturbing but that may be my brain crunching it's way through problems and past hurts while in hibernation mode. The big thing is, I'm sleeping again and it's a way more forgiving sleep drug than the "classic" sleep meds that are out there. Both cause longer sleep periods but I'm less groggy w/ the Mirtazapine then pretty much all the other sleeping meds I've tried. Lack of sleep slowly kills.Read More Read Less

I was given this medication as an aid to help me sleep. I was not told it was an anti depressant. I would take 1/2 pill (15mg) and sleep for 18+ hours, then be drowsy and would fall asleep whenever I sat down for the next 24 hours or so. Also vicious mood swings, happy one minute, angry and mad the next or crying... Not a good experience with this drug...

Have been on it for 9 mos and trying to wean off which I am finding very difficult.initially started on 15mg up to 45 and now back to 30mg weaning down over the next 2 months. I put on 20 lbs after losing baby weight but felt much better. The weight gain and a positive change in life situation is my reason for going off this med.

I was prescribed this medication to help my insomnia caused by severe depression. After being released from the hospital I weighed 123 pounds which was low for me. I was unable to sleep and many sleeping medicines were ineffective. They would put me to sleep, but I couldn't stay asleep. My doctor switched me to mirtazapine, thinking that it would help. While it has made me sleep the side effects have been miserable. The medicine puts you into such a deep sleep that your dreams are insanely vivid. I can't wake myself up from them, and I wake up most days so upset from the dreams. One day in particular I had my pillow in a headlock and was repeatedly punching it, all while in a deep sleep. It is a frustrating medication to be on. Not to mention I am a very healthy person, I eat mainly fruits, veggies and lean proteins. I also work out 3-5 times a week. I am now up to 135 pounds which is high for me. It is also very frustrating as I put a lot of effort into eating right and exercising. It is also not helpful for my depression. The continual weight gain is very aggravating and certainly does not help with self-esteem and depression issues. I requested at my last appointment being switched to something else, but my doctor told me that it can't make you gain weight, only increase your appetite. I think however, that the next time I go I will be insistent that we switch.Read More Read Less

You stay foggy for hours after waking up. Sleep good, but the dreams are so disturbing that you think of them for days after having them and you also feel trapped while dreaming unable to wake up. Could tolerate the foggy head, but the bizarre dreams were too disturbing, they were awful and stayed with you after you were awake, just thinking how crazy the dream was. Went to Prozac, worked for me like a charm. No side effects at all and it seems to work very well for my anxiety. Stay away from the other stuff, it's evil. Read More Read Less

Dry mouth, weakness in hands, drowsy, quivering, unexpected jerking, cold sweats after going to bed for the night, back and neck pain/ache, feeling anxious about driving or walking. None of this happened before I took the medication. Taking 30mg at bedtime.

I have been eating very little compared to the average person of my age and body type. Still I continue to gain weight despite being very active i.e. 1hour of vigourous cardio workout daily.

I'd been working second and third shifts, and had a hard time re-establishing my night-time sleep pattern after getting back on day shift. I was only sleeping about four hours a night and then be wide awake for the next three hours, only to doze off and on the last hour. Then I had some disturbing traumatic information, and found myself only sleeping two hours each night, and a heaviness in my chest. Couldn't concentrate or eat. My doctor put me on this medication, and from day one has been great! Sleep through the night, eat, no heaviness. But after the first month of medication (purchased through Walgreens), I had my medication changed to be sent through the mail through CVS/Caremark. THIS medication is completly different. Can't sleep through the night, constipated, and other symptoms people talk of. Talked to my doctor and got some more medication through Walgreens, and I'm back to sleeping through the night again. BEWARE, just because the name of the med is the same, it may work different. Walgreens is an oval shaped pill, and CVS is round.Read More Read Less

I became 10 times more depressed than I had been before taking it. For two days I felt HORRIBLE but at least realized it was the drug causing it. I kept eating chocolate until I finally felt better. I'm not kidding. I'll never take it again!! I only wanted an antidepressant for about a week anyway.

My psychiatrist prescribed this for me for sleep, 15mg at bedtime. It not only worked, it knocks me out for about 18 hours. I am sleepy, dizzy, and cannot function the next day. I am already on Lexapro, and Lamictal, which have been working well for my depression and mood disorder. But adding this drug has pushed me over the edge into a non-functioning person the next day. If I do use this at bedtime, I have to take it early and split the tab into quarters, then bit off only an 8th of a pill or less. Hope this review helps. Read More Read Less

Was originally put on this drug 4 years ago to treat anxiety related insomnia which probably also had some depressive content although I was not diagnosed as such. It worked magnificently for a few years. Slept great, although I did have lots of weird and vivid dreams. I also had the eating related issues which took me several months to control and are no longer an issue. Recently, I have started to have sleep issues again. The mirtazapine needs a lot of help to get me to sleep, and the anxiety is creeping back. I am less satisfied with it today than I was just a few weeks ago.Read More Read Less
