I am an MD, and I have about 300 diabetic patients, and I am myself a diabetic. I prescribe and use metformin. The only side effects of note are intestinal problems, and perhaps some patients are more susceptible than others. To decrease or avoid these problems, take metformin with a meal, and eat plenty of fiber; taking psyllium helps decrease gas. Most people here think that anything that happen...

I've been on the medicine for about a month, I take four pills a day 500 mg at dinner. Although I've had some extreme muscle weakness I think overall the side effects haven't been that bad. Yet to see how it affects my sugar and weight.
Horrible side effects and have tried medication 3 times never again
I have been on metformin (2000mg) since January 2023. I started taking it shortly after a PCOS diagnosis. I have noticed a huge difference. So far I have lost 20lbs and I notice physical symptoms of PCOS such as acne going away! It has been a life saver for me on my journey while TTC baby #2.
If you’re not already suffering from a mental disorder , don’t take this med. had severe mood swings anger outbursts and now doing better have had have normal blood sugar and no chest pains . Stay on a low carb diet and no alcohol what I been doing seems to work and taking vitamins .
Being treated for Diabetes 2, have had prurigo nodularis 4 years. The drug seems to do little for my blood glucose, my numbers haven't decreased, BUT, my skin condition seems to be improving. Has anyone found "off label" positive results from this medication?
Was prescribed 20 years ago for elevated blood sugars, now sugars are elevated and am diagnosed a diabetic. This medication doesn't appear to reduce my blood sugars significantly, have had better results with various supplements for more immediate reduction in blood sugar. On my most recent experience with Metformin ER 500mg, had extreme pain on a shin tendon at 3 a.m., NOT something I experienced in the past, and not listed as a side effect one might anticipate. The manufacturer of that was TAGI. Refused to continue using this brand. SUN brand seems to not cause this problem, so far....but my opinion is our pharmaceuticals are NOT what they used to be. Also know that the processing of some meds produces a cancer causing agent (i.e. Losartan, Valsartan & Amlodpine (BP meds), Metformin also is included to have cancer causing agents, why is this not on the label? I have little faith that if the cancer causing agent NMDA (?) reaches a dangerous level, it will not be dispensed. NPR had a story over 15 years ago as to the poor oversight of drug production in the countries they are made. Are we now the frog in the pot?Read More Read Less
I have been on metformin for 3 weeks and I can no longer take it. It had made me feel crazy. Like I'm dying. My body doesn't feel right and the past two days my anxiety has sky rocketed almost making me call 911 thinking I was having a heart attack. Doc prescribed this for weight loss and it did okay at first. I felt like I had more energy and I was getting things done I normally would avoid. I wasemt eatting as much. I haven't weighed my self so I can't tell you if it worked but sadly my doctor told me I might just be super sensitive to medication. Read More Read Less
I wanted a baby but my period wasn't regular. So my doctor prescribed me this medication for 3 months to make my period on time and make me ovulate on time. Within 1 month I conceived. I'm now 3 months pregnant with twins.
I've been on Metformin for several years...500MG 2x day ...if I take prior to eating it might give me a stomach ache but that doesn't happen often. My A1C is usually good...esp if I am careful with my diet too.
I was having severe body pain especially in my backs didn't and didn't know why . My dad takes metformin as well and called and asked if my body hurt and that's how I found out what was causing it.
It was effective 10 years ago when I was first diagnosed type 2. Now even at maximum dose it provides little effect on my BGL. I am now on two insulins to control BGL. I still take Metformin ER because doctor claims it has other benefits for diabetes patients? I’ve read pro’s and con’s about continuing this drug. I don’t have many digestive side effects from the drug. If I did, I would discontinue it.
I have been living with severe pelvic pain due to endometriosis for 12 years. I have endured 2 unsuccessful surgeries, participated in two clinical trials, undergone multiple tests, completed 2 courses of pelvic floor PT, and been in acupuncture for 2 years. About 6 weeks ago, my doctor allowed me to try metformin. I started with 500 mg once a day, and worked my way up to 500 mg three times a day. I am thankful to say that I am experiencing relief that I never thought would be possible! At first, I noticed that I had more energy. Then my brain fog cleared up. Now, I have been pain free for 2 days in a row! I'm also noticing a little more room in my clothes which is the cherry on top! I am posting this review in hopes that women who are living with this terrible condition will find it and have the chance to experience living pain free. Read More Read Less
I was prescribed one 500mg tablet per day. Initially it was effective in bringing my blood sugar levels down, however this didn't last. I experienced dreadful constipation, liver pain, general gut pain and the colour of my bowel motions became a very light brown. I generally felt sick. Honestly I felt if I kept using metformin I would have died. My GP has prescribed another medication that is much better...blood sugars are good and none of the above side effects.
I have PCOS. My PCP put me on 500mg extended release (ER) in February to help with insulin resistance. I had one day where my stomach was upset, then no issues at all for 4 months and I did feel better. Went to my OBGYN to see if we could have a baby, and he had me increase my dose to 1000mg ER for a week, then increase again to 1500mg ER. I was pretty sick to my stomach on the 1000mg, but was extremely sick on the 1500mg. I lost 12 lbs in one week I was so sick. While it did give me a positive ovulation test, I had to stop taking it because it was affecting my ability to work/function. I have tried twice now to restart at the 500mg ER dose, and just with one pill I am back to being extremely sick. I messaged my PCP and she said I must have developed an intolerance to it. I’m sad that it didn’t work out- I really did feel better while on the 500mg dose, but this medication makes me very ill. Read More Read Less
I was diagnosed with type two diabetes when I was pregnant with my son. I was devastated. I was instantly put on insulin injections four times a day. Once I had my son I fell waaaay off track. It was easy to eat things that were quick and easy to make but I felt like dookey most the time. I was recently at my OBGYN (who diagnosed me originally) and she prescribed me metformin extended release. I was too scared to take it as I had taken it when I was diagnosed with PCOS at 13, and it made me really sick. Well, I started it again and was told absolutely no carbs for a few hours before and then none after taking it. It’s been AMAZING how it’s reacting with my body! No diarrhea or vomiting, and my blood sugars are beginning to drop back down! Especially my fasting blood sugar. I have also noticed no cravings for sweets or salty foods and my appetite has been very little. Others reviews may scare you but it reacts to everyone’s bodies differently. No sugar or carbs before, or after taking it and you should be good! Read More Read Less
Gave it 30 days. So much gut pain seemed to get worse - sludge/ gas/swelling. . I looked 6 months pregnant. - I stopped taking 5 days ago still with pain- sludge. -Dr says it will be like this another 2 weeks. I feel like it might have done irreparable damage to my colon. Pain so bad I thought appendix burst. Missed work- social events. . The last 4 weeks= hell. I was borderline pre diabetic. So can do fine with more exercise weigh 130- best day of my life - Stopping. If my body /digestive system doesn’t return to where it was “carefree - predictable- no gas or weird sludge- I will seek damages. Read More Read Less
I was diagnosed with pre-diabetic by my doctor. I came to get my blood pressure checked and he added that. I also need to take this medicine. So far I had to say that Metformin HCL 500MG isn't that bad. I found out that my mother-in-law takes the same medicine. She's been taking it for 30 years. But someday she doesn't take it because her body's doing well without it. But she has a machine that counts her sugar. I don't have that in my doctor. Didn't recommend it.
Made be feel crazy all types of emotions
Type 2 diabetes, was prescribed 500mg x2 day with ozempic 0.5. Also, other medications for BP and cholesterol. I have also been prescribed a constant blood monitor (freestyle libre) which allowed greater visibility to glucose levels. The result was oscillating blood glucose levels from 21 to 2 (Hypo to Hyperglysimic) states very quickly when mixed with exercise. Levels could drop from 12+ before starting exercise to 2 in less than 10 minutes. Needless to say, this caused extreme physical and emotional impacts to my person including hospitalization with cardiac symptoms yet to be fully explained. Once I removed the metformin from the equation sugar level are stabilizing even during bouts of exercise. I believe that this was also occurring with the medicine Januvia which contains Metformin. I am unable to prove that as I did have the benefit of a constant glucose monitor at the time but the symptoms were exactly the same less the measurements. Long story short, not sure why it was happening but I would strongly recommend a constant glucose monitor so you can monitor blood glucose in near real-time. Be aware that fluctuations of this nature could/will cause adverse involuntary behaviors.Read More Read Less
I was diagnosed with diabetes and my doc had me take 500 mg twice and day and then after a week - 1000 mg twice a day. I have survived two weeks and she is stopping it because I got a bad rash (possible allergic reaction). We will try something new if the side effects go away and she knows it was from this med. It made me so sick to my stomach, with horrible stomach issues and diarrhea. I have had no appetite and the smell of food was awful. I hope there is something better out there!
